Liberty Arts Trio

The Liberty Arts Trio is a Cincinnati-based chamber music group made up of area music teachers who just enjoy getting together and making great music. The trio members are Jean Shim, violin; Doug Bruestle, cello; and Steve Tedesco, piano. Performing for musical events around the Cincinnati area such as church chamber music series, the trio performs a variety of chamber works from Josef Haydn to Frank Bridge. Recently, the trio has performed for Chamberpalooza, an event sponsored by the Cincinnati Chamber Music Network and held annually in the Fountain Room of the Cincinnati Art Museum.

Jean Shim, violin

Violinist Jean (Jieun) Shim graduated summa cum laude from Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea, and later obtained her master's degree from Hochschule für Musik Hannover in Germany. Following that, she earned a Konzertexamen degree with unanimous approval from the panel at Hochschule für Musik Detmold in Germany. She has won numerous awards in competition and performed in South Korea, Germany, Italy, the United States, Austria, Poland, and others. Currently, she is actively involved with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and Liberty Arts trio, in addition to teaching students at Liberty Bible Academy, Bethany School, and through private lessons, nurturing the next generation of musicians.

Douglas Bruestle, cello

Doug Bruestle, ‘cello, is a life-long Cincinnati musician and educator. He has both Bachelor and Master’s degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music with Major in Music Education, ‘cello study with Jack Kirstein and Peter Wiley and chamber music coaching with members of the LaSalle String Quartet. He had a one-year tenure as principal ‘cellist of the Kamloops (B.C. Canada) Symphony, and has performed with the Cincinnati Symphony, Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra, Dayton Philharmonic, and Middletown Symphony. Music direction and conducting experiences have included the Middletown Symphony, Middletown Youth Symphony, and 18 years leading music at Mt. Airy United Methodist Church. The greatest joy of his career came in leading the Fleeting Moments Waltz and Quickstep Orchestra, providing support for some of the finest dancers specializing in the vintage era in Cincinnati, around the country and internationally.

Since retiring from public-school music teaching in 2013, Doug spends the majority of his time singing, as chorister at Christ Church Cathedral and with the Cincinnati May Festival Chorus. All of this is only possible because of his great fortune partnering for nearly 44 years with his amazing wife Dawn, and to honor the lives our incredible three children, Ryan, Katie and Emily.

Steve Tedesco, piano

Steve Tedesco, the pianist for the trio, has been playing and teaching music and private piano in the Cincinnati area since the early 1990s. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano Performance from East Tennessee State University, a Master of Music degree in Music Theory from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a Master of Education from Xavier University. Steve is a band director for Cincinnati Public Schools and Liberty Bible Academy in Mason, Ohio. He has had considerable experiences in solo classical piano and jazz performances, along with church music ministry in both director and church pianist roles. In this latter part of his career, he is excited to step into a new sideline venture of performing classical chamber music and formed the Liberty Arts Trio in 2023.
